DIY Tips

Furnace Making Noise:
If your furnace is making too much noise, there is something wrong with the ductwork. The noises that we hear are generated by the expansion and contraction of the ductwork due to the passage of hot air inside them. In order to fix this problem, turn on the furnace and wait for the sharp noise to find out the location of the noise. Measure the width of all sides of the duct at this particular point. Fit iron angles according to these measurements at the problem location. This will stiffen the ductwork, and restrict its contraction and expansion. Repeat the same procedure for all sources of noise.

Production of excessive soot:
Production of excessive soot is another common furnace repair Montgomery requirement Soot formation generally takes place due to the use of low quality fuel. Consider switching a higher quality fuel if you are facing this problem. This may also take place if the filters of your furnace are clogged. Cleaning or replacing the filter is the next step if your furnace continues to produce black soot even after using a better fuel. Apart from the filter, thoroughly clean all other parts like duct work, chimney, and flue with a cleaning brush. The problem could be with the fan limit switch, heat exchanger, burner, or the barometric dumper, if all the above mentioned tips fail to solve the problem. In that case, you may think about hiring a furnace repair Montgomery technician to fix the problem.

Furnace is Not Igniting or Turning On:
Most of the furnaces have a flame sensor and an igniter. The function of the flame sensors is to ignite the gas and circulate heat inside the room. The furnaces are shut down by flame sensors when there is a problem with the igniter. Replacing the igniter is the only fix of this problem. While choosing the replacement igniter, look for one that matches perfectly with the old igniter. Consider using silicon nitride igniter if you have already replaced your igniter several times. These igniters have much higher durability comparing to the commonly used silicon carbide igniters.

Repair or replace? If your gas furnace falters or fails, a few simple procedures may save you the cost and trouble of seeking professional help: If you're getting low airflow, check the air filter on the furnace; a clogged filter could cut airflow to a trickle. See if there are loose wires or a malfunction in the thermostat. For an electronic thermostat that runs on batteries, try changing them. Are fuses burned out or circuit breakers tripped? If so, power may have been cut to the fan or circuit board. If those steps don't work, call a heating contractor. Despite the improved efficiency of most new furnaces, it's generally more cost-effective to repair a furnace than to replace it. However, if a key component such as the heat exchanger or control module fails, you're probably better off replacing the furnace, especially if the unit is more than about 15 years old (furnaces typically last an average of 15 to 18 years).
